This file consists of three Chinese notebooks for the practice of writing and calligraphy ("xi zi bu", "Fang ge xi zi bu", "Shu fa Lian xi bu"), for primary school students. They have not been used, and there is no date, no printing information, and no school name.

Small concertina notebook in Chinese, manuscript. Bought in an Oxfam bookshop for 3£. Could be a notebook kept by someone who was fitting out a ship for a voyage, or some similar occupation. The notebook has separate sets of ink and pencil Chinese characters, and so perhaps the book has been used for two separate projects. A few pages have what appear to be pencilled English translations of a few characters and occasional transcriptions in Arabic numerals.

2 notebooks containing Etymological and Philological Notes by Alexander MacBain. Also included in notebook headed, 'Philological Notes', are a number of newspaper cuttings containing a report of the Hibbert Lectures, delivered by Professor Sir John Rhys (1840-1915) on 'The Origin and Growth of Religion as illustrated by Celtic Heathendom'.

Lecture notebooks and laboratory notebooks containing notes taken by David J Lockwood during his time as a research fellow at the University of Edinburgh in the 1970s. Also includes a manual on IMP routines for data handling.

Content Description This collection contains two sets of material:1. Letters to Dr. Lonsdale, of Rosehill, Carlisle, and addressed variously to: Cumberland Infirmary; Marine Crescent, Waterloo, Liverpool; Playhouse Yard, Thomas Street, Scarbro'; and, Teviot Row, Edinburgh. The letters show that he was assembling information with a view to overseeing a biography of his mentor, John Reid. Two notebooks created to contain work, with Georg Hartung, and others, relating to Madeira – with references to Canary Islands, Gran Canarias, Tenerife and the Azores. No indexes in either, the notebooks record discussions, reading, and include drawings and copy letters (in Mary's writing) on volcanoes, lava slopes, shells, elevations and upheaval.

Scope and Contents This is a manuscript notebook by Rear Admiral George John Malcolm, dated 1878-1881 and containing draft correspondence, speeches and descriptive accounts relating principally to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden ahead of the British occupation of Egypt in 1882.
