Scope and Contents Story about a cow's illness being transferred to a woman probably collected in Barraigh/Isle of Barra, in which a girl herding cows notices that one of her cows is swollen. A passing traveller advises her to put a sample of the cow's urine in a bottle, to put a cork in the bottle and never remove it. She did this. A woman was seeking help for her mother who was swollen and likely to die and was only cured of her illness once the bottle was uncorked. The cow got better after this too. The...

Story about the 'daughter of the caistealan' who was killed by her father for going to visit her lover while she was crossing Doirlinn [Bernera Island, Lios Mòr/Lismore]. She was buried in Cladh a' Ghleann and Carmichael notes that there is another graveyard at Pillebhudh [Pollbhuidhe] 'on a beaut[i]ful knoll'.

Story about a deformed calf, August 1886

Story about a deformed calf which tells how Captain Macasgail [MacAskill] at Calgary [Calgarraidh, Am Muile/Isle of Mull] would not allow a calf born with two heads and eight legs to be killed and so had it buried alive. The raoic [bellow] which the calf made echoed around the glen and frightened people.

Story probably collected from Donald MacColl, foxhunter, Glencreran, Earra Ghàidheal/Argyllshire, about a dispute over a march at Meall a Bhogaire between the Stewarts and Glencoe, in which a MacFhraing [Rankin] is shot by a Stewart through a cleft in the rock and the Glencoe men fled and never came back. The rock is known as 'Clach Mhic Fhraing'.

Story about a drowned puppy collected from John MacAulay from Gearrloch [Geàrrloch/Gairloch, Ros is Cromba/Ross and Cromarty] but living in Edinburgh [Dùn Èideann]. The story tells how boys used to make ceallagan [strings of hooks] for fishermen. One boy drowned a puppy and the next morning a trosg [cod] was caught on his ceallag [string of hooks] and when it was opened up the drowned puppy was found inside it. Story about a fairy child, probably collected on Barraigh/Isle of Barra, telling how the child 'was not growing a bit...it was a small wizened old fashioned child'. One day its mother left it in bed under the care of an old man in case he awoke. 'The child wakened and got up an dmade a basin of fuarag - cream and meal - for himself and then went to bed like a sen[ile] man.'

A young man saw the fairy hill open and inside there was music and dancing. Scope and Contents Story about a fairy enchantment telling how a man in Allasdal [Allathasdal/Allasdale, Barraigh/Isle of Barra], which was 'always famous for its fair[ies]' was pestered so much by a beautiful fairy woman whom he could not resist that he emigrated to America. He was advised to make sure that not a single belonging of his was left behind. Unfortunately, he left an 'old harrow in the back door of his kiln barn' and so the fairy was still able to trouble him. He wrote to family and friends on...

Story collected from Iain MacLeod, crofter, Bhaltos [Bhaltos/Valtos, Eilean Leòdhais /Isle of Lewis] about a delicate man from Bearnaraidh Bheag [Bearnaraigh Bheag/Little Bernera, Eilean Leòdhais /Isle of Lewis] called Lachlan mac Iain 'ic Tharmaid 'ic Aonghais Mhòir. A man met the fairies and spoke to them in many languages but the one they understood was Gaelic. The man asked if Lachlan was theirs and the fairies said that he was and took him into the fairy hill.
