Scope and Contents Story and customs written down by John Ewen MacRury, Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula about Leac na gruagaich [Leac na Gruagaich, Beinn na Faoghla, Benbecula], a stone which was on the croft of Angus MacAulay, Liniclate [Lionacleit] at 'Rudha Chuidh Oib or Cuidh an Obain', an old cattle fold. The tradition was to pour a little milk into the hollow of the stone to prevent the gruagaich letting the cattle out of the fold and into the corn. MacRury tells how Raoghnull MacRuaraidh 'a Cuial decendant...

Story entitled 'An Gruagach' about the appearance of a gruagach [brownie] in Iain Donn's father's house at night. The story notes that the gruagach visited Fiarey [Fiaraidh] where there is a leac gruagach [a large stone with a hollow] onto which milk is spilt, so that the gruagach will look after the cattle through the night, so that they do not get out.

The first expression reads 'Tha tart air muinntir anns an talamh' which refers to a belief that there were creatures who lived 'below' who lived on spilt milk, cream or water. The second expression is 'Na canaibh guth - tha bial feumach a feitheamh air', which was said by an old man when his wife spilt some milk on the floor.
