Intelligence quotient (IQ) scores are commonly used to determine whether an individual has an intellectual disability. IQ scores between 70 and 79 are in the borderline range. "This girl is a bit dull and "weak". She works as a domestic and hangs a lot round soldiers billets. She had an illegitimate child. Housing: fairly clean. Sergt. says this girl is a kleptomaniac and cannot help herself - takes useless things, cigarettes, sugar etc. Employers have been sympathetic and she has not been charged. She is thought to be encouraged by her mother."

"This boy was a boarded out child and a great problem at school, but not stupid. Considered abnormal. Now a message boy. Illegitimate, mother a maid in a hotel. [Male informant] this boy does many silly things - uprooting plants, letting ducks out, stealing eggs etc. Had several foster homes. Tried to get him in the army but he was too stupid. Very backward at school but something likeable about him. Burned his leg with a phospherous bomb."

"[Male informant] says this man has no brains, can just read the addresses of the letters he delivers. Is on a country round. Quick-tempered but quite decent. None of the family has any brains "just lumps of flesh with a face painted on it". All the children take after their father, mother has noticed this and deplores it."
