Lecture Notes of John Robison

Scope and Contents Lecture notes from the time when Robison was Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. The notes embrace the sciences of mechanics, hydrodynamics, astronomy and optics, together with electricity and magnetism.

It is assumed that these are Robison's own notes but this has not been verified.

Scope and Contents Story about the Battle of Sheriffmuir collected from Alastair Mac Coinnich [Alexander MacKenzie], Loch Uisge-bhadh [Loch Uiskevagh, Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula] originally from Gearrloch [Geàrrloch/Gairloch, Ros is Cromba/Ross and Cromarty]. The story tells how at the battle, horses came amongst the Gaels and scattered them. Fear Leitir-iù [a MacKenzie] and Iain MacConnich [John MacKenzie], the informant's maternal grandfather, were up against five troops and so Fear Leitir-iù told John to go...

Scope and Contents Story about the Battle of Sheriffmuir probably collected from Alexander MacKenzie, Uisgeabhagh/Uiskevagh, Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula, telling how at the battle, horses came amongst the Gaels and scattered them. Fear Leitir-iù [a MacKenzie] and Iain MacConnich [John MacKenzie], the informant's maternal grandfather, were up against five troops and so Fear Leitir-iù told John to go back to back with him and in that way they managed to kill the five soldiers with their swords.

Scope and Contents Transciption notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael. The inside front cover is inscribed in ink with 'Bought at Wadebridge Cornwall Dec[ember] 1 1864 p 1/6 A A Carmichael' and the opposite page has 'A A Carmichael' written on it in pencil. The notebook contains Fenian songs or tales mainly collected in Uibhist a Deas/South Uist and Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula, some of which are repeated in full or in part. These include 'Laoidh na Muileartaich', 'Duan an Deirg' and 'A' Bhraoin Chaorain'....
