Scope and Contents

Story about the Battle of Sheriffmuir collected from Alastair Mac Coinnich [Alexander MacKenzie], Loch Uisge-bhadh [Loch Uiskevagh, Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula] originally from Gearrloch [Geàrrloch/Gairloch, Ros is Cromba/Ross and Cromarty]. The story tells how at the battle, horses came amongst the Gaels and scattered them. Fear Leitir-iù [a MacKenzie] and Iain MacConnich [John MacKenzie], the informant's maternal grandfather, were up against five troops and so Fear Leitir-iù told John to go back to back with him and in that way they managed to kill the five soldiers with their swords. Fear Leitir-iù says to Iain, 'Math thu fhein...mharbh thu fhein a dha dhiu s chuir mi fhein crioch air an tri eile' [You killed three and I finished off three others]. This appears to be a fair copy of the version found at CW104/10 folio 35r.
