Lateral view of the right hemisphere; a craniotomy has been performed to expose the brain around the central sulcus. Drawings depict two areas of abnormality on the surface of the brain adjacent to the central sulcus. The exact pathology and the procedure depicted are unknown. Drawing likely to be by Hester Thom.

The drawings depict the removal of a spinal cord neuroma in the region of the lumber vertebrae (L4). Three posterior view drawings show the stages of removal. Series of three illustrations (A, B and C) depicting carotid artery + cavernous A.V (arteriovenous) fistula. A) shows an opening above the carotid in the neck and an opening in the skull (frontal craniotomy) – the frontal lobe is retracted to allow visualisation of the AV fistula in the cavernous sinus. Drawings B and C show correction of the fistula via ligature.

Series of three illustrations showing surgical exploration of the lateral left orbit; 1) Planned incision depicted by dashed line across the length of the upper forehead, curving up into the temple and ending at the lower, anterior boarder of the left ear. Blood vessels of the lower face (including facial artery) depicted, 2) shows face post-surgical incision, superior part of forehead and left orbit has been pulled down to reveal left temple and orbit, 3) brain revealed with craniotomy.

Series of five illustrations demonstrating a procedure on the brain at the back of the skull. 1) shows patient lying face down in preparation for operation. 2) shows T shaped planned incision on the back of the head at the level of the cerebellum. 3) shows craniotomy over the cerebellum, which has been pulled up with retractors to reveal the anatomy below. 4) Accessing of intracranial aneurysm, 5) simple sketch of aneurysm and associate blood vessels.
