Biography

Frederick II was King of Prussia from 1740 until 1786, the longest reign of any Hohenzollern king. He was the eldest surviving son of Frederick William I, King of Prussia, and Sophia Dorothea of Hanover, daughter of George I of Britain. He was most noted for his military victories, including his eventual success in the Seven Years' War.

Scope and Contents A short piece of prose followed by lyrics for a song titled "King Frederick's Camp." It tells the story of Frederick the Great who, in order to deceive his enemy, commanded that no light should be kindled throughout his encampment. However, a young soldier lit a taper to write a letter to his new bride. On discovery, King Frederick commanded him to finish the letter, "and add that you are to be shot tomorrow morning, for disobedience of orders." Unsigned but in the hand of Louisa Matilda...
