Biography

James Erskine, Lord Barjarg and Alva (1723–13-May 1796) was the son of Charles Erskine, Lord Tinwald. He was an 18th-century Scottish lawyer who rose to be a Senator of the College of Justice. He is buried in St Cuthbert's churchyard, Edinburgh.

Contents The manuscript contains the gospel of Saint John according to the Vulgate and a set of glosses [i.e. annotations and comments] to the whole text. The first chapters of the gospel are missing and the text begins at John 9: verse 30. The text contained in the glosses is that of the Glossa Ordinaria, an extensive commentary on the Scriptures which was extremely popular in the Middle Ages.
