MS 72: Compendium theologicae veritatis by Hugh Ripelin, 16th century

 Item
Identifier: MS 72

Contents

16th century Scottish manuscript of the Compendium theologicae veritatis. This text was one of the most widely read theological manuals or textbooks of the Middle Ages. It is divided into seven books: 1 The Nature of God; 2 The Creation; 3 On Sin; 4 The Incarnation; 5 On Grace, Beatitudes and the Sacraments; 6 The Sacraments; 7 The Last Things. It has been attributed to a variety of authors, such as Albertus Magnus (it was published in Albertus Magnus, Opera omnia xxiv in 1895). Current research points to Hugh Ripelin of Strasburg (also called Hugo Argentinensis), a Dominican theologian at Strasbourg, as the most likely author. The original text was probably written in 1268.

Custodial History

Probably a Scottish book. Part of an inscription by a contemporary hand on f. 3 reads, ad dompnum Robertum Farguson monachum et claustralem Dunfermlynensem priorem ("to master Robert Farguson, monk and prior at Dunfermline abbey"). The Town Records of Dunfermline show that Robert Ferguson was prior about 1530.

There are some bibliographical notes on the manuscript in a modern hand bound in with it, and to these Laing adds a note : "This manuscript was in the Library collected by Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonston, Bart., and sold by auction in London, March 1816. It was bound along with a work by John Major, 1528. Sec No. 1541 of the Sale Catalogue." See Sale Catalogue of Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun,Bart. Sold by J.G. Cochrane, London, March 14, 1816. No. 1541. B.M. 821, g. 31 (A copy of the sale catalogue of Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun can be found in the University of Edinburgh library, Special Collections JA2325).
