Description and sketch of an airi [àiridh], 17 October 1873
Scope and Contents
Description and sketch of an airi [àiridh] about five miles south of Ness [Nis, Eilean Leòdhais/Isle of Lewis]. The shape and composition of the àiridh is noted along with the measurements of the walls. Carmichael also records his reaction to the building, ' My first fe[e]l[in]g on enter[in]g this airi was that of being scared - face to face with things 1000 y[ea]rs ago - The up end of house so unlike aught I had seen before.' He describes another 'both' [bothan or bothy] as having a 'raised recess nearly 2f[eet]t up with room for nearly 2 persons'. Also noted is the presence of gnarled roots at the bottom of the stream and peat banks 'fal[lin]g in & aw[a]y in turfy lumps'.
