Copy of a letter from St Bernard of Clairvaux entitled 'epistola bernardi', 1510

 Part
Identifier: MS 186/ff. 332v-333r

Contents

These two folios, titled 'epistola bernardi' in MS 186, contain a letter from St Bernard, the first abbot of Clairvaux in the early 12th century. St Bernard was influential as a reformer of Benedictine monasticism which led to the creation of the Cistercian Order. In medieval Scotland, the Cistercians were important as the powerful abbey of Melrose was run by their order. In this particular letter, a knight called 'Raymund' is given advice on how to manage servants, wives and children, and how to allot and manage household income and expenses. The knight Raymund remains a mysterious figure, and due to the following of Bernard of Clairvaux and his resulting sainthood, it is unknown if this text is his genuine work.

The letter begins on f. 332r with the line Gracioso et felici militi H. Raymundo... The letter ends on f. 333r with the words perducat sua dampabilis senectus.
