De Ornatu Mulierum [incomplete], 13th century
Contents
This section of MS 167 contains a fragment of the third book of medicine known as the Trotula. The Trotula is a group of three texts, distinct yet usually bound together, on women's medicine from the twelfth century. The third book, contained in MS 167 is entitled De Ornatu Mulierum and deals with women's cosmetic procedures and recipes to preserve and enhance beauty. The section of this text contained in MS 167 presents some of the therapies for dying hair, caring for the face and teeth, and some recipes for the stomach. This is only a fragment of longer versions of the De Ornatu Mulierum text as it does not include every bit of advice in each section, but rather seems to pick and choose a selection of what was perhaps most relevant and useful in a specific case.
Based on Monica Green's published edition of the Trotula texts, MS 167 contains a short prologue, and versions of Sections 242-252, 272, 273, 275, 276, 278-280, 302-304, and 301 (out of order) of the De Ornatu Mulierum text.
On f. 11v, the text begins with Ut ait Ypocras in libro quem de pronosticorum scientia edidit... The text ends on f. 15v with the words Nota quod per duo dies aut per tres istud durabit.
ff. 11-15 of MS 167 are in the same neat, 13th-century hand as the first 11 folios of the volume.
