Sermones by Caesarius of Arles, Eusebius Gallicanus, Eucherius of Lyon, Faustus of Riez, 15th century

 part
Identifier: MS 108/ff. 81r-100r

Scope and Contents

A collection of seventeen sermons. The copyst presents them as addressed to monks and gives the alternative title Speculum monacorum ('Mirror for monks') in his rubric at the beginning of the text. The sermons are all attributed by the copyst to Caesarius (c. 468 - 542) who became Bishop of Arles and one of the most important religious authorities and influent preachers of Merovingian France. The collection contained in this manuscript, however, gather sermons which are now attributed to other authors, all active in Gaul between the fifth and the sixth century: the so-called 'Eusebius Gallicanus', a fictitius name for the author of a collection of sermons; Eucherius of Lyon (died c. 450); Faustus of Riez (died c. 495).
