Contents

The second work by Sallust contained in MS 190 is Bellum Jugurthinum. This work covers the rebellion against Rome by the king of Numidia (northern Africa), Jugurtha, in 112-105 BC. Sallust describes the rise to power of Gaius Marius (who defeated Jugurtha) and his attack on the ruling Roman elite. In this context, like in his De coniuratione Catiline, Sallust reveals his populist view of the social and political turmoil between the nobility/Senate and the Roman people (plebians).

On f. 43r the text begins with the heading: Ejusdem Gaii Crispi Salustii in Jugurtam Regem Numidiarum prohemium. The prologue starts with the line Falso querit humanum genus de natura sua quod...

On f. 45r the text proper begins: Explicit prohemium. Incipit exordium ystorie.Bellum scripturus sum quod cum jugurtha...

The text ends on f. 127v, with the words spes atque opes civitatis illo site sunt. Finis.
