Contents

The manuscript proper contains lecture notes written in 1477 in Louven by Magnus Makculloch. These notes are in Latin and are about on lectures about philosophy and logic by Petrus de Mera, Andrea de Alchmaria, and Theodricus Meyssach. The first part of the manuscript (ff. 1r-58v) contains extracts from the six books of Aristotle’s Organon, as well as Porphyry’s introduction to it. The second part of the manuscript (ff. 59r-200r) contains commentaries on the above texts by Petrus de Mera, Andrea de Alchmaria, and Theodricus Meyssach.

Extracts:

ff. 1r-4v: Isagoge (Introduction to Aristotle’s Categories) by Porphyry.

This section begins on f. 1r with the words Cum sit necessarium grisarori et ad earn quae est apud aristotelem predicamentorum. After this short prologue ends, the text begins with the words Iste est liber predicabilium porphurii qui dividitur. It ends on f. 4v with the words prius in textu.

ff. 5r-11v: Categoriae (Categories) by Aristotle.

This section begins on f. 5r with the words Iste est liber predicamentorum ar[istotelis] qui dividitur in tres tractatus. It ends on f. 11v with the words pene omnes emendati sunt. Sequitur liber periarminiarum Ar[istotelis].

ff. 12r-17r: De Interpretatione (On Interpretation) by Aristotle.

This section is titled Primum oportet constituere quid nomen et quid verbum et quid amrmacio et quid negacio, and the text itself starts on f. 12r with the words Iste est liber periarminiarum. This section ends on f. 17r with the words rebus enunciatis. Explicit 2us liber periarminiarum xiii die mensis marcii anno dni. m°lxxvii, etc.

ff. 17r-29v: Analytica Priora (Prior Analytics) by Aristotle.

The incipit for this section, Incipit liber primus priorum analecticorum Anstotelis s[criptus] p[er] M. Macullocht, is on f. 17r. The text begins on f. 17v. It is titled Primum oportet dicere circa quid et de quo est praesens and begins with the words Iste est liber priorum analecticorum Ar [istotelis]. It ends on f. 29v with the words et in hoc finitur priorum, etc. Explicit priorum, incipit posteriorum.

ff. 30r-40v: Analytica Posteriora ( Posterior Analytics) by Aristotle.

This section is titled Omnis doctrina et omnis disciplina demonstrata tit ex preexistente cognicione and begins on f. 30r with the words Iste est primus liber posteriorum Ar[istotelis]. This section ends incompletely on f. 40v with the words contingeret dispu.

ff. 41r-48v: Topica (Topics) by Aristotle.

This section is titled Propositum qui dein negocii methadum est invenire viam and starts on f. 41r with the words Iste est liber topicorum Ar[istotelis]. It ends on f. 48v with the words et in hoc finitur 2us topicorum. Sequitur de elenchis. Et hec de dyaleticis dicta sufficiant per me Mackulloch.

ff. 49r-58v: De Sophisticis Elenchis (On Sophistical Refutations) by Aristotle

This section starts on f. 49r and is titled De elenchis autem et sophisticis determinandum est et. It ends on f. 58v with the words et hoc finitur elenchorum 2us per me Magnum Makcullocht. Explicit. Deo gracias.

ff. 59r-85r: Quaestiones super librum Porphyrii (Commentary on Porphyry's Isagoge) by Petrus de Mera

This section starts on f. 59r with the words Circa initium tocius logice Aristotelis queritur and ends on f. 85r with de quibus pro praesenti dicta surficiant. Explicit. The colophon for this section reads Explicit liber predicabilium porphirii lectus ab egregio viro et scientifico artium magistro magistro Petro de Mera. Scriptus nee non completus per me Magnum Makculloch. Lovanium.

ff. 88r-120r: Quaestiones super librum Praedicamentorum (Commentary on Aristotle's Categoriae) by Petrus de Mera.

This section starts on f. 88r with the title Circa inicium libri predicamentorum Aristotelis movetur questio talis utrum. It ends on f. 120r with the words et in hoc linitur liber predicamentorum. Explicit liber prcdicamentorum Ar[istotelis].

ff. 120r-136v: Quaestiones super librum Perihermenias (Commentary on Aristotle's De Interpretatione) by Petrus de Mera and Andreas de Alkmaria.

The incipit for this section is on f. 120r: Incipit liber periarminiarum Ar[istotelis] lecti a venerabilibus viris artium magistris liber scilicet predicamentorum quousque praesentum quando a magistro Petro de Mera. Cetera vero predicamenta cum pro praesentis et ceteris libris a magistro Andrea de Achmaria scripti in porco Magnum Makcullocht de rossia in lovanio residentem, cujus dexteram conservat omnipotens deus pater scilicet et filius et spiritus sanctus qui est deus meus gloriosus in.

The text itself begins on f. 121r with the title Circa initium libri periarmenearum Aristotelis movetur primo questio talis utrum. It ends on f. 136v with the words non dicuntur gracias. The Colophon reads Explicit vetus ars scripta per me Johannem de tayn alias Makculloch ac lecta ab egregiis et scientificiis viris arcium magistris magistro scilicet Petro de Mera et magistro Andrea de Achmaria quos conservat trinus in personis et unus. In cenam.

ff. 136v-161v: Priora (Commentary on Aristotle's Analytica Priora) by Andreas de Alkmaria

The incipit for this section (Incipit nova logica in octavis pentecostis cum leticia) is on f. 136v, and is followed by the words Plaude puella parens paradisi porta parata. Crimine casta carens cum christo clarificata. Salve salutata sine sorde virgo serena. Pellens peccata pietate puerpera plena. The text itself starts on f. 137r with the title Circa inicium nove logice movetur primo utrum de novaquestio talis.

Book One ends on f. 154v with the words Explicit primus liber priorum scriptus lovanii sub venerabili et scientifico viro arcium magistro magistro Andrea de Alchmaria anno domini millesimo quadringentesimo septuagesimo septimo mensis vero Julii die decimo 3 in pedagogio appellato porco circa horam undecimam per. Scoti subtilis nomen subtilia donat. Quem vestis vilis pes nudus corda coronat. Jam scripsi totum pro cristo da michi potum.

The incipit for Book Two is on f. 154v: Incipit secundus liber priorum Analccticorum Ar[istotelis]. Detur pro penna scriptori pulclira puella. The text for this book starts on f. 155r with the title In quantis igitur figuris per quales et quot. This book and section ends on f. 161v with the words Explicit secundus priorum, incipit primus posteriorum per me; the latter refers to the next section.

ff. 162r-181r: Posteriora (Commentary on Aristotle's Analytica Posteriora) by Andreas de Alkmaria

This section starts on f. 162r with the words Circa initium libri posteriorum movetur primo questio talis.

Book One ends on f. 177r with the words Explicit primus liber posteriorum scriptus lovanii in prefesto exaltacionis sanctissime crucis D.N.J.C. anno dni. millesimo quadringentesimo septuagesimo septimo lectus a venerabili et scientifico viro arcium magistro magistro Andrea de Alchmaria in famoso pedagogio porci per me M.

Book Two starts on f. 177r and ends on f. 181r with the words haberi noticia principiorum. Deo Laus. Explicit primus liber posteriorum Ar. scriptus lovanio in prefesto Michaelia Archangeli circa mediam duodecime lectus a venerabili viro arcium magistro magistro Andrea de Alchmaria in famoso pedagogio porci per me. Nunc finem feci penitet me si male scripsi. Deo gracias, etc. There is a short verse, which seems to be addressed to the Virgin Mary, after this.

ff. 182r-187r: Quaestiones super librum Topicorum (Commentary on Aristotle's Topica) by Theodoricus Messaych

This section starts on f. 182r with the title Circa inicium librorum octo librorum topicorum Ar. It ends incompletely on f. 187r.

ff. 189r-200r: Quaestiones in libros Elenchorum (Commentary on Aristotle's De Sophisticis Elenchis) by Theodoricus Messaych

This section starts on f. 189r with the title Circa inicium librorum elenchorum movetur questio.

Book One ends on f. 198v with the words et in hoc finitur primus elenchorum per me Magnum Macullocht. Plaude puella, etc.

Book Two starts on f. 199r and ends on f. 200r with the words et in hoc finitur 2us elenchorum. Hie ponimus metricam benedicimus atque poetam. Scriptori posco merces reddatur olimpho. Magnus Macculluocht.

The Colophon on f. 200r reads Expliciunt logicalia Ar. scripta lovanii lecta partim a venerabili viro arcium magistro M. Petro de Mera, partim a venerabili et egregio clerico arcium magistro M. Andrea de Alchmaria et partim a doctissimo viro arcium magistro M. Theodrico Messaych, lectoribus logicorum anno incarnacionis dominice m°lxxvii in famoso pedagogio porci per me.

Writing

The extracts and commentaries are all written in the same hand. It is a fair, rather minute hand, with the headings and quotations in large, black, Gothic script.
