 part
Identifier: MS 218/ll. 169-344; 695-870

Contents

These two leaves are from the Middle English Richard Coer de Lyon that appears in the Auchinleck manuscript. This is a verse text recounting the life of Richard I, King of England, and is both historical and fantastical.

The first leaf begins with R[ichard went agayn] wel stille, which is recognisable as line 1745 of the text (according to Weber’s edition – see Bibliography) and line 169 of the version in the Auchinleck manuscript, despite the damage. It ends with After him priked on her stede, which is line 1918 and 344 respectively.

The second leaf begins with And of whete grete plente, which is line 2579 of the text (according to Weber’s edition – see Bibliography), and line 695 of the version in the Auchinleck manuscript. This leaf ends with Erl, baroun, squier and kniȝt, which is line 2763 and 870 respectively.

Both leaves should be placed between f. 326 and f. 327 in the Auchinleck manuscript, with another fragment between them.
