Composite manuscript including four texts, mostly the Decretales Gregorii IX et Innocentii IV, 2nd half of the 13th century
Scope and Contents
MS 300 contains four texts bound together, in different hands. It includes a copy of the Decretales Gregorii IX (Decretals of Pope Gregory IX) ordered by Pope Gregory IX, and put together by his chaplain and confessor, Raymond of Peñafort, and a copy of the Decretales Innocentii IV (Decretals of Innocent IV). Verses have been added to the volume in blank space during the 13th century, as well as a poem of twenty-one long lines in French.
ff. 1r-273v: Decretals of Gregory IX.
ff. 274r-282r: Decretals of Innocent IV (thirty-seven of the forty-two decrees of Innocent IV).
margins: verses in Latin added in the margins and blank spaces during the 13th century.
f. 282v: twenty-one long line poem in French, 13th century.

Written by several hands.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The volume came into the Edinburgh University collection as part of the James Cathcart White bequest in 1943, one of the fourteen medieval manuscripts in his collection, eleven of which were books of hours. Cathcart White was a graduate of the University of Edinburgh in 1873, and an Edinburgh advocate in the late 19th-mid 20th century.
