Madeira - Notes, Indexes, 5 November 1856 - 1857
Scope and Contents
Dark green to black leather soft cover notebook with marbled end paper, paginated in handwritten ink. Identified with side label 'Mad-eira Index Manual 55' and on the front with a label 'Madeira p1-53 Notes [amended text] 1856 C.L. and on the next line, Manual [underlined] new Ed[ition] [from] p.55 Indexes'. Also contains notes on Lyell's preparation for an edition of his Manual of Elementary Geology.
This notebook does not have its own index, rather, it signposts that it contains indexes to: Madeira manuscripts; from p. 80 to Lyell's '2nd Edition Manual new Edition etc.'; and from p. 86 to the 'older 1st edition' including on p. 78, a list of plates. In summary, it contains:
p. 1-54 Questions on other papers on Madeira, how to publish the Canary Islands paper - perhaps part should be written in German with Hartung. "In the introduction the geographical details must not be too long or the geological reader is deturred [sic]". Then a page by page review of Madeira text with Lyell's own observational drawings, then Memoranda to action for the paper.
p. 55 - 70 Manual of Elementary Geology for French Translation and New Edition etc. Notes on the time periods and technical terms- Eocene, Pliocene, Pleistocene - with references back to previous Notebook listed as 218, 216, 215. Refers to reading and researchers - Lartet, Falconer, Darwin etc. as well as copy letter to Searles Wood.
p. 71 Contents of Madeira drawer - lists documents and shells therein.
