Notes and Correspondence on the geology of the Madeiran and Canary Islands, 1854-1856
Scope and Contents
This series contains the information gathered by Sir Charles Lyell on a visit to Madeira and the Canary Islands, accompanied by Mary Lyell, and Charles and Frances Bunbury, and their servants, in the winter of 1853 until the spring of 1854. Lyell met up with, and worked intensively alongside Georg Hartung. They studied the volcanic and geological features of the island including fossils and shells.
There is a detailed 'Index to the Notebooks on Geology of Madeira' in the series of Index notebooks, reference Coll-203/A5/16, which indexes the relevant Scientific Notebooks 185 - 197, as well as these manuscripts.
There are additionally two separate notebooks listed as Coll-203/A4/1 dated 1856-1857, and Coll-203/A4/2 dated 1858-1859.
These documents have been foliated, and item listed, apart from 3 folders which appear at the end of the list - which were found alongside the run of Offprints and have been inserted back into this series.
