1. Letter dated 21 July 1863: "It will be quite convenient to receive you & Lady Lyell with her servant on the 29th Aug[us]t & Lady Armstrong and I hope you will not hesitate to come. I have several houses available for sleeping within a few hundred yards of my own & I have abundance of room in all other aspects [...]".
2. Letter dated 29 August 1863: "I am very sorry that we are obliged to go to dinner without waiting your arrival more especially as your sleeping rooms are not in this house. I should recommend you & Lady Lyell to join us in travelling costume at our dinner to day where there will be many others I dare say in morning dress. But if you prefer dining otherwise you must tell your driver to take you to Mrs. Trickey’s in the Dean & Keep him there until you are ready to come to the dining hall. It is only 200 yards to walk but 3/4 of a mile to drive. Tomorrow we will make all comfortable for Lady Lyell & I hope she will excuse dif[f]erent attention this evening [...]".
Includes a portrait photograph of Armstrong (110 x 143 mm) by W. & D. Downey, and a photographic print of the Armstrong residence (76 x 133 mm).
