Scope and Contents

1. Autograph letter of excuse from William Boxall to Katharine Murray Lyell following an invitation (dated 31 January 1867): "I have been in bed two days with one of my bad attacks in the throat. I hoped till this moment that I might have had the pleasure of dining with you on Saturday but I am so unwell that I feel that it will be impossible for me to leave the house. – I am most grateful to you and to Col. Lyell and to Sir Charles and your sister for unremitting kindness and I cannot help telling you how sorry I am to give up the pleasure of seeing you. I know at the same time how many kind friends you have who would better fill the place that you have offered me that I beseech you to accept my thanks and this apology for not being with you on Saturday [...]".

2. Letter of excuse to Sir Charles Lyell following an invitation: "Many thanks for your kind note – It would have been a real pleasure to have joined your party today but this happens to be the day of the dinner of the Academy and thus for the first time I must have the honor of showing myself. – It is very kind of Lady Lyell to think so well of my pictures and of you to tell me of her approbation [...]". With traces of former mounting. The name of the recipient is inscribed in pencil (verso).

3. Autograph letter signed from William boxall to Katharine Murray Lyell concerning Sir Charles Lyell’s grave monument (dated 13 January 1877): "Thank you greatly for the photograph of the monument to my dear Old Friend Sir Charles – The Inscription is admirable – perhaps I should be inclined to agree in your criticism that the name of Charles Lyell should have been in the largest letters. It is however a small criticism while I must repeat my entire feeling with the Inscription. I should not have delayed writing back [but] my hand would not write for me till to day and now I must apologize for its clumsiness. [...]".
