Scope and Contents

1. Autograph letter signed from Henry Bruce to "Mrs Lyell", dated 15 February [?] 1856: "Lina has forwarded me your kind invitation for the 24th – Alas! I am engaged on that day to see old friend Mrs Drummond – I read with such pleasure your account of Sir Charles – Pray remember me to him & Lady Bunbury very affectionates [...]".

2. Autograph letter signed from Henry Bruce to Frances Joanna Horner, Lady Bunbury, dated 23 February [?] 1877: "I have much pleasure in inlaying two letters of introduction for your friends – I don’t know the address of M. de [...] – but it can easily be got at the Embassy – as they are the Layards’ [i. e. Sir Austen Henry and Mary Enid Evelyn, née Guest] intimate friends – I beg to thank you for your kind inquiries after the welfare of my leg. It is making slow but steady progress & I am, altho[ugh] timidly prudent, able now to crawl about with the help of one crutch – & hope soon to be permuted to a walking-stick. Norah & I are just starting for Pembroke Lodge, to pay a visit to the veteran Carl, who I fear is almost too deaf for conversation – He is eager to come to the House estate – but I never expect to see him there again [...]".

One letter on stationery with address stamped in blue, and pierced hole, the other on mourning stationery with address stamped in black. Both letters with traces of old montage verso. Photograph from the atelier "Lock & Whitfield", with old traces of mounting on verso.
