Scope and Contents

1. Autograph letter signed from Christian von Bunsen to Leornard Horner, dated 5 August 1858: "Welcome in Germany! I was afraid you had gone to Hekekiah and Sesustesen instead of my dear country, and am happy to know you so near. You threaten to overthrow the balance of the minor states however, by all settling in such numbers in one Dukedom only: and as I ever not wish you to separate, we might hope you would put up headquarters for a week or two at Heidelberg where there are plenty of empty houses and even hotels, people having overbuilt and overspeculated themselves. If however you can only bestow upon Heidelberg the interval of the two trains which serve [...] we hope you will straight drive to us, partake of our family-dinner at 2, and stay with us till a little after [...] 4 o’clock [...] Now as to next week we are certainly taken up by Sir Benjamin & Lady Hall [i. e. the civil engineer and politician Sir Benjamin Hall, 1st Baron Llanover, and his wife Augusta], who have come over to visit us: they arrive next Saturday, and he stays till the Saturday next. So, as you have the month at your disposal, we should prefer either next Friday, or Monday 16th [...] I hope on this occasion to become acquainted with the real facts as to your undisproved chronology which hitherto I only know through insufficient newspapers’ notices, and which interests me in the highest degree [...]". "Lepsius [i. e. the Egyptologist and linguist Karl Richard Lepsius, a pioneer of modern archaeology] is here, and most anxious to be introduced to you and yours, in particular also to his fair and accomplished translator. We intend going Friday or Saturday to see Lady Raffles, an old friend of Prof Lepsius, at Hephwood, and take an early luncheon with her: we might that same day come to see you on our way home, about 5 or 6 p. m [...]" (1 September).

2. Autograph letter signed from Christian von Bunsen to Charles Lyell, dated 25 January [no year]: "A commission arrived last Saturday from the King, for a legal business of the Crown, at this place, which requires my presence, has brought me hither, and I find, that I cannot hope to finish it before Thursday or Friday. I therefore send these lines to say how sorry I am to loose so agreeable an evening as that which you had kindly invited me to [...]".
