Scope and Contents

1. Autograph letter signed from Louis Mallet to Katharine Murray Lyell, dated 12 May 1889: “We are coming again to London next Wed[nesday] to stay a few days with the Thrings [i. e. probably the family of the educator Edward Thring] – & shall I hope see you. I will speak to Lord without word the letters. But my impression is that it is Spencer Walpole [i. e. the English historian and civil servant] who is editing Lord Russell. He too is in town, & I shall probably see him. I am trying to get me a Vol: of his father’s reminiscences, for private orientation, which will I hope interest you. It goes down to 1800 [...]”.

2. Autograph letter signed from Louis Mallet to Katharine Murray Lyell, dated 5 June 1889): “I spent two days at the A. Russells[‘] – Sunday & Monday – & there I met Spencer Walpole. So I spoke of your letters – & was told that Lady Russell has given him copies of three letters from Lord John to Mr Horner I think of that date you mention. Walpole concludes that they are the copies of those in your possession. The first was written from Lisbon. He regrets that he got them too late to include them, but hopes to do so in the next editing [...]”.

3. Autograph letter signed from Louis Mallet to Katharine Murray Lyell, dated 18 Nov. 1889): “The ladies you mention are all mentioned in my father’s memoir. Madame Achard was the wife of a Genevan [?] who had settled in business in London – & was a very charming person. They lived in Gt. Ormonde [!] St. at first & were neighbours of my grandmother who was then living there with my father 1800 [...] They then moved to Bloomsbury Square & at this house my father met the Romillys[,] Macrets[,] [Étienne] Dumont, Wishaw, Sidney Smith, D’Ivernois [i. e. the Genevan economist and political writer François D’Ivernois], Dr. Moore, Dr. Baillie [i. e. perhaps the brother of the Scottish poet Joanna Baillie], Gentry [?] – & Mme de Stael. My father lived much with them after the return of his mother & sister to Geneva – & accompanied them to the country in the summer. He calls M.dme Achard, the ‘mother of his mind’ [...]”.
