Scope and Contents
Correspondence relating to Daniel S. Malekebu.
1-10. The Malekebu Enquiry
In 1919, Simon Malekubu and his wife had written from America to Daniel's sister, Mrs Ruth Lawrence, in Nyasaland, expressing their intention of coming home. This was at a time that natives were holding meetings to advocate a policy of 'Africa for the Africans'. The Governor of Nyasaland, believing Malekebu to be deeply imbued with doctrines similar to Chilembwe, Cheek and Branch, asked for an enquiry to be instigated as to his possible political intentions.

20. William J. Harvey, the Foreign Mission Board, Philadelphia, to George Shepperson. Dr Malekebu had been in trouble. Following retirement, he 'decided that he would resume leadership at P.I.M. and enlisted the aid of four of his ministerial followers. At his suggestion, they sued the leadership of P.I.M. and the Foreign Mission Board, contesting ownership of the property and disavowing any connection with the Board… Documentary evidence submitted by the Board refuted all of Dr Malekebu's allegations and the Court found in favour of the Board'. Following the judgement of the Court, the Board felt that advanced years and senility had contributed to Dr Malekebu's actions. The writer asks where a copy of Independent African can be obtained in the States. In Malawi, he happened upon a book entitled Malawi to Remember by D. D. Phiri. Considered it well written for popular consumption.
