Scope and Contents

This series contains photographs, mostly black and white. Most depict missions in Nyasaland/Malawi, and their people (both African and European).

  1. Photographs of missions, of African people, and of European people. No captions.
  2. Photographs sent and captioned by Josephine Cunningham Edwards, featuring missions in Malawi, with Malawian and European people. See "Coll-490/22/COR3".
  3. Two photographs taken at the Commonwealth Institute in Edinburgh when Hon. W. Deleza (Malawi Minister of Labour) received the Chief's stool on behalf of Hastings Banda (then Malawi's Life President). Accompanying letter from B. B. Mtaŵali, High Commissioner, dated 21 April 1989.
  4. "Early Blantyre photographs" sent by George Shepperson to the BBC Radio Times, and returned in 1982. Accompanying letter by Pat Carthy, dated 17 May 1982.
  5. Photograph of a plan of the West Shire Coal Field near Kakoma, Malawi.
  6. Photographs of missions and missionaries sent to George Shepperson: early photographs of Plainfield Mission, Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Cholo; photographs sent by Leon R. Lawton. Temple City, California; photographs sent by D. S. Wylie, Oxford (including pictures of Norman Leys and his family, Harry Leakey, Dr MacDonald, W. Mcgregor Ross ); photographs of early-20th century missions in Nyasaland, with a "Marcus Garvey Papers, California" label on envelope. Most dated photos are from the early 20th century.
  7. Photographs sent to George Shepperson by Douglas Guthrie in 1965. The photos were donated to Guthrie by Miss Mary Manson, who held them herself from the descendants of a relative, Major Boggie, who "was Rhodesia about the time of Cecil Rhodes". The photographs depicts Rhodesia at the end of the 19th century. With accompanying letters by Douglas Guthrie (14 November 1965), Mary Manson (28 November 1952), and Jean Guthrie (28 and 30 April 1976, thanking Shepperson for accepting the outfit of Witch Doctor bequeathed to him by her husband Douglas Guthrie).
  8. Envelope of photographs with the caption: "Pre-1915 Photos - Miscellaneous".
  9. Photographs sent to George Shepperson by Jack Thompson. With two accompanying letters, 3 May 1979 and 10 March 1980.
