Biographical / Historical

Gawain Douglas was a Scottish poet, famous for his Eneados, his full translation of Virgil's Aeneid from Latin into Middle Scottish, completed in 1513. His nephew, Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus, married James IV's widow, Margaret Tudor, following her husband's death at the Battle of Flodden. He became Bishop of Dunkeld in 1516. He died of the plague in London in September of 1522.

Custodial History

There is a latin inscription for David Lindsay's authorship of 'Monarchie.' The bottom of the page is also dated 1527.

Another inscription, a dedication possibly, is dated 1563. Two old shelfmarks, first page of text: "AC.c.4" and "Mss.3.10." The second to final page of text is inscribed: "David Anderson burges of Aberdeen 1563"

The volume was donated to the Edinburgh University library in 1692 by a master's student, John Aikman.

Brown, leather bound. Gold embossed university library crest on cover. Banded spine. Title on binding, gold text: "Gawin Douglas's Virgil and Sir David Lindsey's Monarchie."
