This may be a view of the fronts of the cottages (later demolished) shown in the views of Ramsay Gardens in Coll-1167/B/26/1/15-16. If this indeed the case, the sloping street must be Ramsay Lane, looking east towards the Free Church (new New College). See Coll-1167/B/26/2/5-6.

Tolbooth St. John's Church (Victoria Hall). The Assembly Hall, in Castlehill, is on the right of the picture. The church was previously used as the Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland.
