Scope and Contents Photographic print showing drawing room of Abbotsford House, known to have been the residence of Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). The image shows the hand-painted in China wallpaper, a gift from Scott's cousin Hugh Scott, who worked for the East India Company. The great portrait above the fireplace shows Scott with his dogs Camp and Percy seated in the landscape with the valley of Yarrow behind him. Black and white postcard showing Milecastle 48, located on the south-west of the village of Gilsland and one of the best preserved milecastles on the entire length of Hadrian's Wall. Milecastles were built at every Roman mile along the wall to enable control of people crossing from one side of the wall to the other.
