On the left is part of the gable of the north transept, with its aisle and in the centre is the gable of the south transept. To the left is the part of the north wall of the presbytery (east end) of the church. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was buried amongst the ruins.

Black and white postcard showing Milecastle 48, located on the south-west of the village of Gilsland and one of the best preserved milecastles on the entire length of Hadrian's Wall. Milecastles were built at every Roman mile along the wall to enable control of people crossing from one side of the wall to the other.

Duncan Ban MacIntyre (1724-1812) was a renowned Scottish Gaelic poet born and raised in Glen Orchy, Scotland. The monument was designed by John Thomas Rochead (1814-1878) and was erected in 1859.
