Letter to Sir Charles Lyell from Carlo Gemmellaro replying to earlier letters from Lyell to the Gemmellaro family containing questions relating to the geology of Mount Etna. Gemmellaro diagrees with Lyell that the pressure of subsequent layers of lava depress those beneath, with sketch, and mentions the geographical locations of certain features with respect to the map of Wolfgang Sartorius Von Waltershausen which Gemmellaro feels to be accurate, 21 May 1858.

Scope and Contents The correspondence between Horsfield and Lyell is mainly concerned with geological activity in Indonesia, volcanoes, and lava. Lyell or his team, have summarised the letters, either on the envelope, or on the letter itself - usually in the space allocated to the address. Scope and Contents Lyell summarises the letters as: 1) 'C. Piazzi Smyth Alta Vista lava Nov. 9 1858'. This includes detail by Smyth and measurements of the lava. 2) 'Piazzi Smyth Nov 13 1858 Alta Vista Lava sections hand drawn'. This includes a small drawing within the letter of Smyth's observations on the lava. 3) 'Piazzi Smyth Etna paper, May 9 1959'. 4) 'Piazzi Smyth fossil shells on slopes of Tenerife, May 15 1859'. 5) 'Piazzi Smyth Sa[nta] Cruz on slope of crater'. Scope and Contents This notebook contains a record of Charles Lyell’s travels through France (started in previous notebook, Number 108), including a visit along the Allier River. It is dated 15 - 25 June 1853. Notes are written in pencil and ink and are primarily field notes and observations with numerous sketches. Scope and Contents This black notebook contains a record of Charles Lyell’s geological travels around Madeira with Georg Hartung, Charles Bunbury, Mary Horner, and Frances Horner. Military Engineer António Pedro d’Azevedo also accompanied them, whilst on the Island. This notebook starts December 22nd, 1853, in Funchal and the Southwest areas of Madeira.
