Content Description This is a fine photograph album with 38 albumen prints and one carbon print of portraits of the Geikie family. There is also a birthday card mounted on the front fly-leaf, dated 16 December 1882. Included is a useful later index to the photographs, which identifies the sitters. The oldest two photos must have been taken before the death of both John Geikie and his wife Eleanor in 1864. There are several portraits from the 1870s; and the most recent dated photo is from 1887. The album had been in the possession of the Earl of Cawdor (John Frederick). It is dated 1859. The album is composed of photographic art reproduced on salted paper. Eight images are maritime in nature - vessels at sea - with waves and sails coloured in bluish / greyish tint, and are of drawings done by Willem Van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707).
