"This boy had an IQ of 72 at school and was deaf. He is now working on a farm, looks quite smart and tidy. [Male informant] thinks this boy is all right apart from his deafness. Dr says this boy is dull and lazy; has had a TB ankle. Now works on a farm. Deafness due to perforation."

"This man has been a labourer and goods porter, before that was a tramp and a hop-picker. He is said to have a duodenal ulcer; invalided out of the army. Said also to have deserted from army, deserted wife, has been several times in prison. Not alcoholic. Dr confirms that this man is a poor creature."

"This man, an insurance agent, is alcoholic. Tries to combat it by remaining out of the town until the pubs are closed. Dr confirms this man has bad bouts - used to drink eau-de-cologne. Can stand very little alcohol, has to be put on hyocine. Bad heart. Clever and able man. Grandfather was an alcoholic. [Male informant] thinks this man should not be included as an alcoholic; he has never seen him drunk and it does not interfere with his work. Sergt. does not think this man drinks much."
