The story tells how MacMhurich is coming back from Rum [Rhum] when 'gille glas' asks if MacMhuirich will take him as far as Uist [Uibhist]. Reluctantly, MacMhuirich agrees exchanging some balast for the gille glas. En route water starts coming in so all are called upon to bale out the vessel but to no avail. Story entitled 'Maighdean Mhara' about a mermaid in Loch Bhraoin [Loch Broom, Ros is Cromba/Ross and Cromarty] who appeared to a fishing crew and asked the helmsman for his leth-rann (half-stanza). He said, 'Long a thig sa theid an aithghearr, Sin mo leth-rann.' She said it was as well that was his reply and disappeared. A great storm occurred that day and many men were drowned. Consequently it is believed that when a mermaid like this one is seen, someone will drown soon after.

Transcription notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael. The majority of the volume has been used but intermittently there are groups of blank folios. Carmichael appears to have written in the book in the 1860s creating sections of different genres at different stages in the volume, with pages left blank in between to fill up appropriately. In about 1875 he has then used some of these blank pages to transcribe notes and stories but has not kept to the genres sections he initially created....
