Ink and water-colour drawing by Frank C. Mears, 1910, showing medieval developments of Castle and Royal Burgh, with Holyrood Abbey and beginnings of aristocratic Burgh of Canongait. It also shows the Grassmarket and the "Nor Loch" and the city walls.

A glass plate negative showing an image of Frank C. Mears' "Bird's Eye View of Edinburgh, from the south, c. 1450." (See Coll-1167/B/4/1). A very similar, but no identical drawing was among the exhibits in Geddes' "Cities and Town Planning Exhibition"; it had a rather long inscription noting the various consituents of all medieval towns, and showing how the grouping could vary to meet conditions of site.
