The song is composed of fifty-three lines, four of which were added after a short note about the singer, and has some gaps and deletions.The text has been scored through in ink and written transversely across the first page of text is 'Transcribed Book No II page 266 Thursday 10/11 1870 A[lexander] A[rchibald] C[armichael]'. Also written there but in pencil is the following, 'The old woman sang this song very well considering her age and vowed from our previous meeting that she would give me all the old things she had.'
