Custodial History

There seems to be no doubt that this manuscript was written for the Dominican Convent of Sciennes in Edinburgh. The Gospels are for reading in chapter; they include only one for a specifically Scottish day, that for Saint Monan (f. 12v).

From the inscription on f. 24r (the first leaf of the 'Constitutions'), which reads, Liber Academiae Edinburgenae qui cum sex aliis repositus est pro Bellarmino dat[us] Academiae, 1593, we gather that it was given to the University of Edinbrugh, together with six other books, in exchange for the works of Robert Bellarmine, an influential late-16th century counter-reformationist and theologian. It is therefore one of the first, if not the first, medieval manuscript acquired by the University of Edinburgh.
