Aforismi Ypocratis, 12th century
Contents
The final 45 folios of MS 163, ff. 73-118, contains a copy of the Aphorisms of Hippocrates. This text was also part of the medieval medical reference volume, the 'Articella'. It contains a set of propositions on diagnosis and symptoms of diseases, and also guidance on healing.
The text begins on f. 73r with the famous first sentence of this text: Vita brevis ars vero longa, "Life is short, but art is long".
The text ends on f. 118v, with the words fames enim siccat corpora.
The same 12th century hand from the first and second texts of MS 163. The text of this third treatise is arranged in double columns, but only the column on the left of each leaf contains text. The right-hand side column seems to have been left blank in order for the Greek text to be added.
