This is the 1st volume of te 1st part of a 2-part Gaelic dictionary compiled by Robert Archibald Armstrong. Published in London in 1825, it was the first Gaelic dictionary to be published. This part of the dictionary gives the Gaelic to English lists. The first printed page has printed on it in large upper case letters 'FOCLAIR. GAILIG AGUS BEURLA.' (translation: 'Dictionary. Gaelic and English'). The dictionary is interleaved with systematic manuscript additions by Professor Donald Mackinnon. Professor Mackinnon also makes handwritten editorial annotations on printed pages of the dictionary, including corrections and deletions. The first 43 leaves are inserted leaves with notes by Professor Mackinnon, with the printed dictionary itself starting on a page marked (leaf) 44. This volume of the dictionary begins with A and an explanation of the letter a in Gaelic, and finishes with Fu futhpa (fodhpa).
