Biographical / Historical

London County Council was the principal local government body for Greater London, an elected assembly with responsibility for the 28 metropolitan boroughs from 1887-1965. Borough services included street cleaning, lighting, libraries and rates collection, while the County was responsible for education, ambulances, fire brigades and sewage. Both County and Boroughs were responsible for public housing. The Boroughs could not grant planning consent and although the City of London had its own Corporation, London County Council was the relevant planning authority from 1947.
