The charity’s comprehensive archive dates from its origins up to the present day and comprises correspondence, membership and subscription books, press cuttings, photographs and material focusing on specific campaigns, such as the high-profile Uist Hedgehog Rescue (UHR) coalition. As well as capturing a broad sweep of the organisation’s history and activities, the archive also sheds light on key figures in animal welfare, such as the charity’s former director Clive Hollands (1929-1996), a campaigner who also played a prominent role in politics, including the passing of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.

Biographical / Historical

OneKind is a UK-based animal protection charity. It was founded in Edinburgh in 1911 as the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Vivisection and in 1990 it became known as Advocates for Animals. Over the course of its existence, the charity has expanded from its original philanthropic context to encompass widespread political and social engagement. It is a Scottish charity with a truly international reach.
