The background shows the view looking east (Firth of Forth and Inchkeith), whereas the elevation of the Castle which is shown is from the east looking west. A lithograph delineated by Samuel D. Swarbreck showing Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket. Swarbreck arguably contributed towards the moulding of the Victorian perception of Scotland through his depictions of Scottish scenery. He published a series of "Sketches of Scotland" in 1839.

Likely a reproduction copy of a lithograph showing the foot of the West Bow, first of two copies. Engraved by James Duffield Harding. Signed “J.D.H.” Drawn by George Cattermole (note initials G.C. on wheel-barrow in lower right hand corner). Undated, but second copy at Coll-1167/B/6/3 dated 1881.
