Scope and Contents

Comprises of correspondence sent and received by the Scottish Minorities Group's (SMG) Befriending Team, which includes:

Correspondence from clients to the Befriending Team asking for information and advice, contacts for external services; and arranging in-person meetings.

Correspondence between members of the Befriending Team about individual cases and administrative issues.

SMG correspondence including funding for voluntary organisations and policy decisions, such as the minimum age limit for joining membership.

Correspondence between the Befriending Team and the Edinburgh Branch of SMG and other SMG branches and external organisations and institutions, including: Friend; the Scottish Council on Social Service; the Samaritans; and the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.

Correspondence comes from across the United Kingdom and includes Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and other British cities, as well as rural communities.

Topics and themes discussed include: counselling; marriage; friendship; gay scene; prison; assault; accommodation; psychiatry; coming out; isolation; loneliness; relationship advice; friendship; and ‘TS/Transexual’ (a term used to describe individuals whose gender identity is different from their assigned sex at birth).
