Behind the photographer would have been the junction of Bristo Place, running north, as it still (1989) does, Bristo Street running south, and at a short distance beyond the McEwan Hall, Teviot Place running west. Some recent maps (1970s-1980s) show the site of Bristo Street (north end), as Bristo Place (see Coll-1167/B//17/2-3). Main Point, at the west end of the West Port, looking into High Riggs. At one time, this was one of the most important junctions forming a point of entry into the city. There is still a public house at this corner. Handwritten title by R. Dykes.

A photographic print showing an image of a map of the "Forth and Lothians". This map has also been previously been entitled "Edinburghshire I". It is assumed the 'shire' title was written on the original maps (images of which are shown in Coll-1167/B/27/23/13 and 14). The corresponding glass plate negatives had at some time been taken out of their original envelopes and inserted into new envelopes, with no inscriptions.
