In his study on the origins of Edinburgh in the Outline Survey of the City, shown in the exhibition of 1910, Geddes refers to "cultivation terraces on the south slope" (of the Old Town). These had been virtually obliterated by subsequent development. See notes against the next image in the series Coll-1167/B/27/21/4. Handwritten title on the original envelope containing the corresponding glass plate negatives was written by Alasdair Geddes.

Scope and Contents Terraces on Arthur Seat could refer to other theories about their origins. "...Traces of trenches thrown up (1788) by mutinous Seaforth Highlanders Discontent having arisen in connection with their departure for India, several hundreds of men attacked their officers on the Esplanade, and then held their position here (i.e on Arthur's Seat) for several days until a free pardon was offered them". Likely to be a facsimile. Stipple engraving in the same style as item Coll-1167/B/11/2 View of the buildings at the head of Bess Wynd, Forresters, and Turk's Close with the seat of the Tolbooth, 1803. Possibly reproductions of drawings by the Rev. J. Sime published in Thomas George Stevenson's "Edinburgh in the Olden Time" (1880).
