Scope and Contents

Story written down by John Ewen MacRury entitled 'A Sealladh mu dheireadh a Roca-Barraidh' [The last sighting of Rocabarraigh] telling how the island of Rocabarraigh was seen many years after it sank after it had been prophesied by an old man. The old man's family thought he had died but managed to rouse him and he told them what he had seen. In his vision he had wrestled with a man from Rocabarraigh, who threatened to sink Barraigh/Barra, whereupon every sort of fish would wash up on the shore that year but the following year would not be so plentiful. He also told him that if he got the small stone that was hidden beneath the floor under his ear, then Rocabarraigh would rise up from the ocean and never sink again until the end of the world. An evil ruler would come come out of nowhere to Barra and would leave empty-handed. The fish appeared on the shore as he had predicted but there was no sign of Rocabarraigh, then one night he saw the same man he had wrestled digging up the shore, looking for the small stone. So the old man, in spite of much mockery, persuaded his family to let him go out to look for the island. It was plain-sailing until they reached the spot that the old man said was where they would find Rocabarraigh whereupon the waves rose up in a great tumult, scaring them all senseless. They all gazed in wonder at what a plentiful, lush island was before them but once they had grown tired of their wonderment they returned home and that was the last that was ever seen of the island. As predicted MacNeil came to Barra and ruled under the taxation of the kings and left without any rights to the island..
