Archaeological notes, sketches and story relating to Teampull An Tao Deas or Teampuil an t Sagairt, 12 July1870
Scope and Contents
Archaeological notes, sketches and story relating to Teampull An Tao Deas or Teampuil an t Sagairt, [Teampull an Taobh Deas/Teampull an t-Sagairt Na Hearadh/Isle of Harris]. The first sketch shows a plan of the building with measurements, noting the height of the wall as 7 feet, the breadth 10 feet and the height of the door out 5 feet. Also noted re the dimensions of the altar. A second sketch is a copy plan, with a scaled attached to it. The measurements have not been written on this and it appears as if this is not in Carmichael's hand. The third sketch seems to indicate stonework. The notes add that the temple is almost entire, listing where stones have fallen down, that the building is exposed to the south and west on Ru an Teampuil [Rubh' an Teampaill] and describing the surrounding land and walls. In addition to the archaeological notes is a story of a sighting of Dr MacGillivray's ghost in which a man getting up in the middle of the night to chase sheep out of his corn, sees an apparition in the temple. His dog barks madly at the apparition and runs around it but the man cannot call him off so he runs home. In the morning the dog returns home hairless and the apparition is noted as being Dr MacGillivray's taibhse or ghost.
