Content Description

This is a photograph album of Sheena Lillian Grant Tennant Kendall (1883-1974), composer and daughter of wealthy Scottish industrialist James Tennant. Kendall is well identified in the album, which documents a period of residence in Japan (1919-24), as well as travels in Egypt, Burma, Ceylon, Malaysia and Shanghai, and their life at Scottish and English country estates. It also includes 19 photos of Hakone, Japan in the aftermath of the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923; images of horse racing in Shanghai in 1925; and engaging images of elaborate theatrical productions put on by British expatriates in Kobe, Japan. There are many images of the Tennant family and friends.

Hardcover album, 11.5 x 8.25 inches, dark green with gilt initials S. G. K. on the front. Approximately 220 photographs in total, affixed to both sides of leaves. Various sizes, including 22 large images. Most are captioned in ink on the page. Very good condition.

Biographical / Historical

Sheena Lilian Grant Tennant came from a privileged Scottish family. She was the youngest of the six children of wealthy industrialist James Tennant of Fairlieburne, Fairlie, Ayrshire (nephew of Sir Charles Tennant of the Glen). In 1919 she married Herbert "Ken" Kendall (1881-1964) with whom she travelled to Japan where he worked at the P. & O. office in Kobe. Prior to her marriage she worked as an assistant to Major William Byam (1882-1963), an authority on trench fever, at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Euston, London.
