Scope and Contents Story relating to the shipwreck of the vessel 'Harmony', possibly collected from Roderick MacLellan, receiver of wrecks, Barraigh/Isle of Barra. The story is fragmented but appears to dispute an account put forward by Capt Grey [Captain Thomas Gray] about local people looting the wreck and opinions such as 'The inhabiti[ants] of Lewis like those of other islands immoral' [Eilean Leòdhais/Isle of Lewis]. A quote from 'Charles O' Malley, The Irish Dragoon' which precedes a tale about the wreck...

Scope and Contents Transcription notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael. The majority of the volume has been used but intermittently there are groups of blank folios. Carmichael appears to have written in the book in the 1860s creating sections of different genres at different stages in the volume, with pages left blank in between to fill up appropriately. In about 1875 he has then used some of these blank pages to transcribe notes and stories but has not kept to the genres sections he initially created....

Two songs, one entitled 'Duan Bannag na Callaig' beginning 'Taobh a phocain toa' an tearcain' and the other beginning 'Fhir a Challain i ri o' probably collected from Angus Gunn, cottar, Dail bho Thuath/North Dell, Nis/Ness, Eilean Leòdhais/Isle of Lewis. The note explains that after the second song the custom was that '2 bannag were handed out round the fire'. The text has been scored through in ink as if transcribed elsewhere.

Vocabulary list including words for rheumatism 'Scainteach', 'Greim-loin' and 'Siataig', the first of these being attributed to Islay and the third to Lewis [Ìle and Isle of Lewis/Eilean Leòdhais]. The rest of the note reads 'Scanaport on the river Ness. Ca[thuil] = Catching fish [in] excise ink bottle.'

Vocabulary note entitled 'Clach Nathrach' and accompanying stories, 1895

Scope and Contents Vocabulary note written down by John Ewen MacRury, Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula entitled 'Clach Nathrach' describing it as an 'accumulation of liquid matter form the mouth of the serpent' and where and how it is formed. He recalls having seeing a clach nathrach when at school in Uig, Lewis which was found by 'the herd boy of Croulista...on the south side of Suanaval hill' [Suaineabhal, Eilean Leòdhais/Isle of Lewis]. MacRury notes the clach nathrach as being valued for its healing properties...
