A script or draft article about the Scottish Gaelic poet from Sutherland, Rob Donn. Included with the notebook is a journal extract about Rob Donn, published on 20 June 1878, though there are no notes to indicate in which journal the article was published. The article is folded, and kept with the notebook by means of a modern paperclip.

Scope and Contents Transcription notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael. The majority of the volume has been used but intermittently there are groups of blank folios. Carmichael appears to have written in the book in the 1860s creating sections of different genres at different stages in the volume, with pages left blank in between to fill up appropriately. In about 1875 he has then used some of these blank pages to transcribe notes and stories but has not kept to the genres sections he initially created....

The inside front cover is inscribed in ink with 'Bought at Wadebridge Cornwall Dec[ember] 1 1864 p 1/6 A A Carmichael' and the opposite page has 'A A Carmichael' written on it in pencil. The notebook contains Fenian songs or tales mainly collected in Uibhist a Deas/South Uist and Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula, some of which are repeated in full or in part. Twenty six verses of Fenian poetry beginning 'Dearamad fhagha s an Iuthraich/Iuraich gun do rinn Fionn' probably collected from Eachan MacIsaig [Hector MacIsaac] Ceannlangabhat, [Ìochdar, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist], who, the note states, 'Learnt this from Ruairi Rua ceistir sa cheanna Tuath (Donallach) more than 50 years' [Roderick MacQuien, catechist]. The verses amount to one hundred and two lines.
